House, Ludlow, Shropshire, England.
A new sustainable low energy house.
Private 265 sq m - 3 bedroom one with ensuite, combined living dining kitchen with utility space, study, larder, garage & external log store.

A low energy house generally constructed of materials that are sustainable - timber, extruded clay blocks, gluelam beams, columns and wind posts. Technologies have been included that are now common in such houses:-

  • 4.5sq m flat plate solar thermal panels with twin coil 330ltr. hot water storage cylinder
  • 3.9kWp solar photovotaic panels
  • heat recovery ventilation installation detecting & controlling levels of CO2 & moisture, in addition to recovering upto 95% of the energy from exhausted air
  • low E argon filled triple glazing
  • condensing gas boiler
  • gravity fed rain water harvesting tanks supplying WC's and washing machine

The external fabric is highly insulated, & worst case values are for the roof U Value of 0.10W/m2K, walls 0.13W/m2K, floor 0.15W/m2K, glazing 0.80W/m2K. The roof store is fully insulated and also separated from the house by an insulated floor.

Thermal mass is provided by the porcelain tiled screed and extruded clay block partitions on ground floor and inner leaf of the external walls.

The sliding shutter protects the south facing glazing from sun & in winter can be
positioned half or fully closed sealed by weather stripping to improve thermal insulation.

Soft wood gluelam columns, stair strings & beams

Large roof store during construction before installation of condensing boiler, rain water harvesting tanks & heat recovery unit

100mm extruded clay outer leaves with 150mm rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation

The roof store is fully insulated, clad in Accoya preserved & stabilised softwood
The upper roof rain water is gravity fed to the rain water storage tanks in the roof store

The inner leaf of extrude clay block work is dense plastered to contribute to the thermal mass

A view to the southern fully glazed corner of the main day space; the opening on the left can be fully covered with the sliding screen. Note gluelam beams, wind posts & columns.
