SUCCESSFUL APPEAL WITH IMPORTANT SUSTAINABLE IMPLICATIONS FOR LISTED BUILDINGS
We have successfully appealed against Bristol's
refusal to permit external thermal cladding of a grade II listed building
in a conservation area.
The side and rear plain rendered elevations are to be clad in 100mm of
phenolic board and rendered. Stone sills are to be extended. The ashlar
stone front elevation remains undisturbed.
The enclosure of the 500-600mm thick stone walls will give very useful
thermal mass and this house now has double glazed timber sash windows,
a heat recovery ventilation system, and solar thermal panels hidden in
a valley.
There are almost 500,000 listed buidings of which most have very poor
thermal performance; these and the existing housing stock present the
real challenge if we are to take the need to conserve energy seriously.

COMMENDED
AWARD FOR GIBSON ROAD HOUSE - BRISTOL
We are pleased to have received from Redland and Cotham Amenity Society
an award for this small house.
Ironically this is the 2nd house in Gibson Road to receive a design award
after successfully appealing against a planning refusal.
Bristol City Planning Department again refused permission for a new house
based on our commended house and only two properties away. This February
2009 our appeal to the Planning Inspectorate was successful and construction
will start this summer 2009.
The
question is raised - what are the policies that are guiding the Bristol
City Planning Department
that are so out of phase with both the Planning Inspectorate, applicants
and the local community

'NEW
APPROACH' TO HOUSING REHABILITATION
With Hansford Building Services, Inscape is assessing
the use of SIP's (Structural Insulated Panels) in creating 2 flats within
a 19th Century terrace. Only the front and party walls remain of the original
house and SIP's have been used for the new walls and roof.
Nearing completion the speed of erection and the rationisation of services
and other building processes has over come the problems associated with
the traditional building techniques.
The compact floor plans, high thermal insulation properties of the construction,
heat recovery ventilation, and high efficiency heating installation, has
also resulted in relatively good SAP ratings for both flats of 108 &
112 (Standard Assessment Procedure - maximium score 120). |
